Aims
عن عثمان بن عفان رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ” خيركم من تعلم القران وعلمه” (البخاري)
The prophet peace be upon him said: “The best of you are those who study the Quran and teach it”.
ما اجتمع قوم في بيت من بيوت الله يتلون كتاب الله ويتدارسونه فيما بينهم إلا نزلت عليهم السكينة ، وغشيتهم الرحمة ، وحفتهم الملائكة ، وذكرهم الله فيمن عنده (مسلم)
The Prophet said: “Never does a group of people gather in a house of Allah, reciting the Quran and learning the Quran, except that tranquility descends upon them, the mercy of Allah encompasses them, they are surrounded by the angels and Allah mentions them with his company”.
The aims of the QS curriculum are:
- Develop literacy, through guided reading, structured teaching of tajweed and regular individualized assessment and feedback.
- Create an environment that encourages commitment to the holy book and daily supplication.
- Encourage students to reflect on stories in the Quran and how these can inform their character, religiosity and role in society as productive Muslims.
- Develop key skills, knowledge and understanding of the context and time of revelation, principles of tafseer, tajweed rules and meaning of Quran chapters.
Overview of the QS curriculum
Reading (Tilawah)
- Guided reading allows the teacher to model recitation.
- Regular formative assessments and individual regular feedback on application of tajweed and reading.
- Regular peer assessments allow students to develop their listening skills and identification of tajweed rules to develop each other’s reading.
- Students are given individualized targets based on their level of recitation and tajweed (reading criteria)

Memorising (Hifth)
- Students should memorise set chapters of the Quran and hadiths (prophetic statements) each year.
- Students may memorise additional trophy chapters.

Tafseer
Students will:
- Learn the meaning of chapters they memorise.
- Discuss and reflect on key lessons learnt from the Quranic verses.
- Study context and time of revelation of each chapter.
- Learn the meaning of key and high frequency words.

Assessment

Students practice letter and vowel recognition, Shaddah and Madd. Teaching is focused on reciting letters from correct articulation points with correct characteristics.
Students practice fluency of their reading and how to correctly start and stop on verses. They learn the stop and pause symbols and identify the start and end of Arabic words.
Students will read with confidence, applying the basic rules of Tajweed, with focus on characteristics of letters such as tafkheem, ghunnah and qalqalah, rules of Madd and Noon Sakinah rules.
Students at this level read independently applying all rules of Tajweed. The focus is on consistency in reading as well as distinguishing between the levels of ghunna, tafkheem and qalqalah, as well as knowing how and when to stop. Students have good theoretical understanding of tajweed rules.
Students are advanced reciters and have strong theoretical understanding as well as practical application of Tajweed rules. They are expected to know different ways of stopping on a word. Students can explain the rules and identifying them in the text.
